Honoring My Parents: The Creative Hearts That Shaped Me
A year ago today, my life changed forever when my mom passed away. Just five months before that, my dad also left us, and the loss of both of them in such a short time was overwhelming. Yet, in my grief, I’ve found comfort in reflecting on the incredible legacy that they left behind. They were the heart and soul of our family, and their creativity, kindness, and generosity inspire me daily.
Growing up, my mom was nothing short of a magician with a sewing machine. She had this incredible talent for turning fabric into something special, and each Easter, my siblings and I would be dressed in outfits she had lovingly crafted. I have fond memories of my brother, sister, and I in matching lime green and sky blue plaid and gingham outfits, a testament to her attention to detail and love for us. We looked hilarious, but in the best way possible, and those outfits remain a cherished memory of my childhood.
On the other hand, my dad was a master of miniature worlds. He spent countless hours in his model train room, meticulously building trains and intricate buildings from balsa wood, toothpicks, and cardboard. His passion for creating these tiny, detailed worlds was infectious, and I would often find myself lost in the beauty and complexity of his work. The smell of glue and wood shavings in that room is something I’ll never forget. His dedication to his craft and his ability to bring his visions to life profoundly impacted me. It inspired me to pursue my own creative passions.
My parents embodied creativity in their unique ways but were also incredibly generous and kind-hearted. My mom never forgot a birthday or holiday; she ensured everyone felt special and loved, no matter the occasion. Her thoughtfulness and attention to detail were unparalleled. My dad was the kind of neighbor everyone wishes they had—always willing to lend a hand, offer advice, or just be there when you needed him. His helpful nature and commitment to others are values that I strive to embody in my own life.
Together, my parents were the perfect team, balancing creativity and care in a way that improved our family and community. Their influence on my life is immeasurable, and because of them, I started my illustration business. Every piece of art I create is a tribute to their legacy, a way to honor the creativity they nurtured in me and the kindness they showed to everyone around them.
Reflecting on the past year without my mom and the last seventeen months without my dad, I am grateful for my time with both parents. Their love, creativity, and generosity have shaped me into who I am today. I am committed to carrying their legacy forward in everything I do. Their example inspires my work, my relationships, and my contributions to the community.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for everything. I miss you both dearly, but I feel your presence in every stitch I sew, every drawing I create, and every act I perform. Your legacy lives on through me, and I will continue to honor you in all I do.
Many Blessings
